Torch of Hekate Phosphorous Part 3: Fires of Lotan
“I am the storm bringer of lightning and thunder”- Lotan
"Fire keeper you will always be. Keeping its flame ablaze within. You recall our working with the plant medicines. I was with you then as I am now. All herbs, concoctions, and spirits are mine. From the shamans who make elixir of Ayahuasca to the witches who mix herbs to make potions. In the sphere of Samael, you find yourself drunk on its poison. It is the first idea of self-deification or that you are a twin of God. The concoction you drink is not just spiritual but very much my creation. The poison helps break free all the false illusionary aspects of your world. I help those who call on me during this part of a Qliphothic journey as it can be quite maddening to see your world breaking apart. Your intention is your torch that guides you back to your path.
Samael the illusionary sphere holds true that all you see is real. Yet, true heaven is where all work, doing what they love to do, what gives purpose. Then all are in service to each other sharing what they love. Money is not needed as your passion is the currency. Those that love to build, build houses and those that want a house would have one. Then each day would be spent in joy and sharing it. In the rite of expression and integration, it is the acceptance of the lost aspects of self that connects your current to it. Feeding it, so that it can then aid you with its power. Let’s feed each other. You must let go of fear and learn to trust. You drank the poison and now witness the illusion you unconsciously created of your world. All your fears, anxiety, and debt that hold you back from connecting with others. You are like a puffer fish with spikes. Anytime someone gets close you puff and hurt them. Learn from Lotan, shed your skin and be the sea serpent for you are a dragon. Then you will connect and move onto Aarab Zaraq.” -- Hekate/Hecate
Background
Lotan: The Chaos Serpent of Ugaritic Mythology
Lotan is a primeval sea serpent from Ugaritic mythology, dating to the Late Bronze Age (c. 1400–1200 BCE) in the ancient city of Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra, Syria). Lotan represents the forces of chaos and the untamed sea and is best known as an adversary of the storm-god Baʿal Hadad. The figure of Lotan is widely regarded as a close mythological relative of the biblical Leviathan, illustrating deep cultural continuity across the ancient Near East. The name Lotan (Ugaritic: ltn) is often translated as “the twisting one” or “coiling serpent.” In Ugaritic texts, Lotan is described as: “the fleeing serpent, the twisting serpent, the mighty one with seven heads.” This imagery emphasizes Lotan’s monstrous, multi-headed nature and reinforces his role as a cosmic threat.
Lotan appears most prominently in the Baʿal Cycle, a collection of mythological poems written in cuneiform on clay tablets. Lotan is closely associated with Yam, the god of the Sea, who embodies chaos and opposition to divine order. Baʿal, the storm and fertility god, battles Yam and his allies—including Lotan—to establish kingship among the gods. Lotan’s defeat symbolizes the triumph of order over chaos, a central theme in ancient Near Eastern religion. Although Baʿal is the primary hero, Lotan functions as a mythic embodiment of the dangers Baʿal must overcome to secure cosmic stability. Lotan is widely considered the direct precursor to Leviathan in the Hebrew Bible. Similar language appears in:
-
Isaiah 27:1 – “Leviathan the fleeing serpent… the twisting serpent… the dragon in the sea”
-
Psalm 74:13–14 – describing Yahweh crushing the heads of sea monsters
These parallels suggest that Israelite authors adapted older Canaanite mythological imagery into a monotheistic framework, replacing Baʿal with Yahweh as the divine victor. Lotan represents several interconnected ideas such as the unpredictable and destructive power of nature, the forces that resist divine or moral order, and the legitimacy of the ruling god proven through victory. Such chaoskampf (“struggle against chaos”) myths are also found in Mesopotamian (Marduk vs. Tiamat) and Indo-European traditions.
Channeled Working:
“I am the storm bringer of lightning and thunder. I am seen before destruction therefore I warn those of impending change and doom. But do not think of me as a destroyer. I seek to protect and guide those on the path of knowledge as a teacher. Teacher of navigating the dragon gates and through the Qliphoth. My elements are water, air, and fire. As well as the force of electricity and lightning. I am the current and gnosis of traveling. The electrical current in all things. I am the current that lights the sphere of Samael. I am the teacher of seeing through illusions and finding authenticity. For I am a primordial force of illusion and authenticity. As the world you see awake is the false world, it is a very fertile place ruled by Samael and Lilith. I teach secret locations to manifest and create.
I see your emotion is simmering, that is good. In your world and in your work as a magician, your emotion is a weakness. It will propel you or cripple you. Learn to work with it. Be open to feel, yet do not let it control you. You are the organizer of your chaos as Typhon taught you. As Typhon moves through the chaos. I am the charge, the electricity giving energy to the movement and energy released from that movement. That is my gift. I am the rise and release of energetic current.
With the intention set, I am the raising of sexual energy and I am the rising current of orgasm and the transferred energy of release. This is one of the reasons I guard Samael’s realm. Same with Shiva and Shakti.
This is my secret primordial force. The rising kundalini energies are part of my gnosis. The electric charge passed to the nerves and felt. This is my internal working. Externally I am the rising volcano and the energy given from its blast. This is part of my creation and destruction. Like Leviathan between the deep and Nehamoth, I am the Blind Dragon. The force between Lilith and Samael as energy, giving life to Samael’s potency, as it transfers to Lilith awakening her seeds of creation. This energy is not just within Samael and Lilith but all who procreate. For as the Kundalini force through breath or stimulation, as it rises, the energy allowing its movement is mine. That is how I effect your inner and outer cosmos.
I attune those to the gnosis of bestowing riddles to teach. I am the awakener to the dreaming state that is in between worlds. Lucid dreaming is my primordial gift. For that I am a bridge between consciousness and unconsciousness worlds. As guide to seeing through illusions in your world. The Qlipoth Samael teaches, that as the adversary and ruler of your own world, you honor its creation. Samael allows those to walk through his world in shame and illusion. This is a sin to him. He then destroys the magician’s world to remind them they are walking in a failed creation. Then this gives way for the magician to create a world that honors their truths. Therefore, I protect the gate of Samael to warn of the change to come. I see a strong correlation between my path and the stories of the great Thunderbird, which awakens those the spirit touches to walk the backwards path. Some call it the Heyoka path which triggers all those whose path they encounter. The purpose is to help those around be authentic to themselves. For this reason, why I am like the Thunderbird bringing lightning and thunder."
Lotan Praxis:
Purpose: The purpose of this rite is to invoke the fires of Lotan to gain his gnosis. Lotan's fire is one of Hecate's keys to the sphere of Samael in the underworld/Qliphoth.
Tools:
Two black tealight/candle
Lancet to anoint the sigil
The Sigil of Hecate (Created by Asenath Mason) and The Sigil of Lotan. It is recommended to draw them on paper or paint them on canvas. Doing so allows your energy to flow into its creation.
Dagger-(Only used for creating the ritual container) Do not use your dagger in the invocations of any of the dragons. How you approach them is how they will approach you and with a dagger can create complications.
Journal
The Invocation
Day 1.
Ritual Prep:
Set up the sigil on an and alter/table facing west and a black tealight next to it. Take a salt shower/bath or ritual bath prior to the invocation. It prepares the mind, body, and spirit for the ritual.
Ritual:
Creating the ritualistic container: Starting in the west and ending in the west making, using a dagger, I would walk counterclockwise drawing the circle. As I walked, I said these words. “I cast this circle of Leviathan around, entwined and bound, above and below to protect the energies so.” Finish by drawing a flaming trident to seal the space.
Light the candle and anoint the sigils with your blood.

Focus on the sigil for a few minutes. When you have the sigil memorized, close your eyes. See the sigil rise out of the grown in gold and silver with flames wrapping around the edges. See the sigil morph and return to its shape and open. Begin chanting Vovin three times and then Hecate three times. Keep chanting until you feel the energy shift. Sit or lay down and see what comes to you. Write down any experiences in your journal.
Closing:
Call to Hekate/Hecate to guide you back home. See if she has any messages for you.
Once back, say: "It is done"
Leave the candle vigil in honor of Hecate
Cast the sigil of fiery trident in reverse to open the space.
Day 2.

Meditation:
After you say the words, sit down. Focus on the sigil for a few minutes. When you have the sigil memorized, close your eyes. See the sigil rise out of the grown in gold and silver with flames wrapping around the edges. See the sigil morph and return to its shape and open. Begin chanting Vovin three times and then Lotan three times. Keep chanting until you feel the energies shift. If accepted Lotan will request you to sit with your left hand up and your right hand down. As you do, feel energy pouring into your body through your left hand and out your right. Turn you right hand up. With both hands facing upward, feel energy rising from both. The transference was complete. Allow any experience to unfold.
As Lotan is the guardian to the gate of Samael ruled by Adrammelech, if he approaches and asking for intention, specify your intent to learn of Lotan's fire. Same if Lilith approaches. Let the experience unfold.
Inner Temple Meditation:
See before you a black door with a silver handle. You have seen this door before, it is to your temple door. Open the door and step in. The torch light flickers on the wall as you see your table, chair and mirror. In the center of the room you see your source flame burning bright. Walk toward it and take a log and place it on the flames. As you do this, the torches on the walls flare up and back down. Turn to the left corner of the room. You see stairs going down into the ground. Next to the stairs is a doorway to another room. Walk into the room. Small torches line the wall. Looking at them, each torch has a frame of a dragon. The light in the room is coming from a fire pit in the middle of the room, Leviathans torch, and Typhons torch. You see logs next to the fire. Take one and say the name Lotan and place it on the fire. This action causes one of the torches to ignite. If Lotan appears, allow the experience to unfold.
Come back here to care for the flame by adding logs to it. You will find the more you do, the more you sense your own energy as well as Lotan's. Know from this day Lotan walks with you.
Closing:
Call to Hekate/Hecate to guide you back home. See if she has any messages for you.
Once back, say: "It is done"
Leave the candle vigil in honor of Lotan
Cast the sigil of fiery trident in reverse to open the space.
