Torch of Hecate/Hekate Phosphorus Part 9: Fire of Yam

Background

Yamm also spelled Yam, Yammu, or Yaw, is a significant figure in ancient Northwest Semitic mythology, especially within the Canaanite and Ugaritic traditions. His name literally means “sea” in Semitic languages, reflecting his identity as the divine personification of the sea, rivers, and chaotic waters. Yamm was worshiped along the eastern Mediterranean coast, particularly in the ancient city of Ugarit (modern-day northern Syria). He is portrayed in the mythological records as the sea god and a powerful force of nature. Yamm embodies the untamed and destructive aspects of the ocean, including storms, floods, and the unpredictable forces of water that ancient seafarers and river-dependent communities feared and respected.

He is sometimes called Yam-Nahar, a compound reflecting both sea and river, emphasizing his domain over all large bodies of water.  Yamm is a son of the supreme god El and is connected with primordial waters and cosmic chaos.  Although he assumes the role of antagonist in the myths, Yamm was still a recognized deity and is thought to have received offerings in ancient worship contexts.  Yamm’s most famous mythological role appears in the Ugaritic Baal Cycle, a set of epic poetic texts discovered at the ancient site of Ugarit. These texts date to around c. 1300–1100 BCE and use myth to express themes of order versus chaos and the establishment of divine rule.

In the Baal Cycle, Yamm demands that the gods recognize him as ruler over them, using his power as the embodiment of the sea. At one point, messengers petition El to hand over Baal as a subordinate to Yamm.  Baal, the storm and fertility god, refuses to submit. In the ensuing cosmic battle, Baal, armed with weapons crafted by the divine craftsman Kothar-wa-Khasis, confronts Yamm. After a fierce fight, Baal defeats Yamm, scattering him and establishing his own authority. This struggle symbolizes the victory of ordered weather and agricultural stability over the unpredictable chaos of the sea. Yamm often symbolizes chaos and the untamed forces of nature. In broader Near Eastern mythological themes, sea gods like Yamm represent the danger and unpredictability of water, requiring divine order to restrain them.

His defeat by Baal reflects a recurring “chaoskampf” (struggle against chaos) motif found in the mythology of many ancient cultures. Scholars also note that personal names invoking Yamm appear in ancient administrative texts, indicating his presence in ancient religion beyond just literary myth.  While later monotheistic traditions do not worship Yamm, scholars have observed that sea-chaos motifs in the Hebrew Bible, such as the defeat of sea monsters like Leviathan, may echo older Canaanite mythological themes involving sea deities like Yamm. In addition, mythological parallels exist between Yamm and sea gods in other cultures such as  Poseidon, though these associations are interpretive and reflect broader cross-cultural comparisons rather than direct continuity.

Yamm and Arachne  Channel

Yamm Channel: "I am androgynous in nature. I was the serpent in the tale of Adam and Eve. I offer fruits of ascension and awaken the spirits truths. As the story was symbolic of the Kundalini serpent rising through sexual union awakening them to a new awareness. Unlike many of the dragons I am without natural form yet move through the waters of your nature. Liken me to the Kundalini Serpent that rides the sexual flow of energy that rest at your crown, kinging you in bodily form like the pharaohs of Egypt. It is this fiery ascent through water that I move. You will find this work moving your spirit to matching its kingly form. This sphere of Satariel is where you make your first agreements as a pure spiritual form. Your intentions are once more questioned before moving towards the final spheres of Ghagiel and Thaumiel. The essence of this sphere is darkness and shadow. The phase in the alchemical process of hardening and forming.

For I am the obliterator of ignorance. I sweep through and awaken all that is hidden within you. It is a bubbling up effect. These hidden aspects are detrimental to your ascension. Accepting them is part of the work with the higher self to create them in this life. It is from this fruit of the tree that you begin to see the fruit grow, the apple of your soul. Accepting the divine nature by eating its fruit. The lies you tell yourself will also bare fruit so be mindful what you eat. You will know the difference in how you receive the them. This is my hidden mystery. As you have read Satariel is the land of concealers. Therefore, I reveal what is hidden or hide from you what you seek based on the fruits. It all begins with the agreement you make with your higher daemon/spirit.

My primordial source of awakening came from birthing between Tiamat and Marduk. I was clandestine to rule yet was given no crown. So, I took my wisdom and set upon the sphere given its location highest to the source. Through choice, the awakening of consciousness. The beholder of the birthright, the crown of gnosis of ascension. It is my right to give these fruits as I obliterate the opposition to it, it forms in alchemy. You must learn to command this gnosis to awaken the crown within you."

Arachne Channel: "It is your will.  With each choice you make, each agreement, I give the threads that link you to them and to those it involves."

Yamm Channel: "It is at this moment I have told you the nature of the sphere but now I will go more into my primordial force. It is both birthing and awakening. It resides in the shaft from below the abyss. From your root to the upper echelon of power. To know my primordial force is to know the waters of creation. It is electric yet aquatic in nature. My force is the electric water current, yet I am cloaked in light and shadow like an eel that can change its color.

You know of my destruction from Baal, yet it was I who sacrificed in purpose my ability to shed tears from the heavens to the earth to him. It was this giving that ascended my truth and primordial force into the sphere of Satariel. This was the first agreement of sacrifice and receiving. Learning of the sphere’s gnosis will guide in making deals and agreements in diplomacy. This diplomacy is the fiery nature and cunning of Lucifuge. You must learn to negotiate in a Kingly way. Do not let yourself fall back into agreements that you let go of in the abyss as it will become destructive.

I am the reaper of an agreement. Do not let yourself be fooled by the currents. You have earned our trust but do not abuse or break our trust. That is a break in trust of self.  The penalty is death or painful existence as that is the break of an agreement. The flow from my energy this becoming, awakens in intention.  That when the intention is broken, it becomes poison destroying from within. You honor and complete the intention it becomes the elixir of life, the ambrosia of the gods.  Build trust to honor your agreement that honors me. Lucifuge is the ruler, but I am the undercurrent connecting Arachne’s web and the agreements that take place. Yamm the usurper, the dragon of eternity that binds those together in karmic knots. It is my force that it all flows.

Stare at a flame and look past it, what do you see? All fires burn with intention. The aura represents the energy given off which is the agreement made. This primordial force is the auric makeup of an agreement. If the agreement is not fulfilled there is a loss. I govern this loss or gain in energy. Lucifuge governs this sphere and is the arbitrator to make deals. This is my nature, the poison from a loss, or electricity from a gain. This can come in the form of emotion or physical loss.  For I am in all things as you need to understand the intentions of existence, this will give you a wiser lens in association. Do not look to others in the wrong context. Look to others with intentions, then you will see the exchange of energy. The reason all loses themselves here is forgetting their original intention and accepting another deal. Maintaining the course assures maturation of the fruits. What is your gift to others? Never forget your torch, bearer.

Yamm Praxis

Purpose:  The purpose of this rite is to invoke the fires of Yamm to gain his gnosis. Yamm's fire is one of Hecate's keys to the sphere of Satariel in the underworld/Qliphoth.

Tools:

Two black tealight/candle

Lancet to anoint the sigil

The Sigil of Hecate (Created by Asenath Mason) and The Sigil of  Yamm. It is recommended to draw them on paper or paint them on canvas. Doing so allows your energy to flow into its creation.

Dagger-(Only used for creating the ritual container) Do not use your dagger in the invocations of any of the dragons. How you approach them is how they will approach you and with a dagger can create complications.

Journal

The Invocation

Day 1.

Ritual Prep:

Set up the sigils on an and alter/table facing west and a black tealight next to it. Take a salt shower/bath or ritual bath prior to the invocation. It prepares the mind, body, and spirit for the ritual.

Ritual:

Creating the ritualistic container: Starting in the west and ending in the west making, using a dagger, I would walk counterclockwise drawing the circle.  As I walked, I said these words. “I cast this circle of Leviathan around, entwined and bound, above and below to protect the energies so.” Finish by drawing a flaming trident to seal the space.

Light the candle and anoint the sigil with your blood

Meditation:

After you say the words, sit down.    Focus on the sigil for a few minutes. When you have the sigil memorized, close your eyes. See the sigil rise out of the ground in gold and silver with flames wrapping around the edges. See the sigil morph and return to its shape and open.   Begin chanting Vovin three times and then Yamm three times. Keep chanting until you feel the energies shift.  If accepted Yamm will request you to sit with your left hand up and your right hand down. As you do, feel energy pouring into your body through your left hand and out your right. Turn you right hand up. With both hands facing upward, feel energy rising from both. The transference was complete. Allow any experience to unfold.

Inner Temple Meditation:

See before you a black door with a silver handle. You have seen this door before, it is to your temple door. Open the door and step in. The torch light flickers on the wall as you see your table, chair and mirror. In the center of the room you see your source flame burning bright. Walk toward it and take a log and place it on the flames. As you do this, the torches on the walls flare up and back down. Turn to the left corner of the room. You see stairs going down into the ground.  Next to the stairs is a doorway to another room. Walk into the room. Small torches line the wall. Looking at them, each torch has a frame of a dragon.  The light in the room is coming from a fire pit in the middle of the room, Leviathans torch, Typhons, Lotan’s, Tannin’s, Tiamat's, Rahab’s, Dagon’s, and Nahar’s torch. You see logs next to the fire. Take one and say the name Yamm and place it on the fire.  This action causes one of the torches to ignite.  If Yamm appears, allow the experience to unfold.

Come back here to care for the flame by adding logs to it. You will find the more you do, the more you sense your own energy as well as Yamm. Know from this day Yamm walks with you

Closing:

Call to Hekate/Hecate to guide you back home. See if she has any messages for you.

Once back, say: "It is done"

Leave the candle vigil in honor of Yamm

Cast the sigil of fiery trident in reverse to open the space.
